Today's
Stress Tip..by
G. Gaynor McTigue..THU.04/21/05 Know when to terminate an encounter. In
our politeness or reluctance to offend another, we often let visits, dates, conversations,
or meetings drag on far longer than they need to -- creating stale, stressful,
awkward situations. Take charge at such times. When things show signs of winding
down naturally, use the opportunity to break in and wrap it up, before it grows
tedious. You're not being rude, you're being considerate of both of you. In fact,
think how you aren't put out when another person has to leave; indeed, you would
feel bad holding them up. Terminate your encounters while they're still fresh,
and you'll save something for next time, too. Why make yourself crazy? Make StressHoliday.com your home page and be greeted each weekday morning with a new stress-reducing strategy! Based
on G. Gaynor McTigue's acclaimed book Why Make Yourself Crazy? featured
in major publications and on talk shows across America.
Do you get stressed in social situations? Are
you uncomfortable mingling at a party? Do you fear whatever you say will be trite
and uninteresting? Do you feel conspicuous and ill at ease? This is can be perfectly
normal, especially if it's people you don't know in an unfamiliar setting. Fretting
about it will only add to your angst. When you're in an "I don't know anyone!"
state, try turning the tables. Assume others are feeling out of place and it's
your job to make them comfortable. This will take the focus off you, give you
reason to initiate contact and allow you to show an interest in someone else,
an admirable social grace. Do this soon after you arrive so the tension of having
to break the ice doesn't begin to mount. It'll help you thrive in any social situation.
