Stress Tip..by
G. Gaynor McTigue..WED.05/25/05 Meltdown? Or brownout? Take your pick. There
are times when we're so harried and overwhelmed by circumstances we simply lose
it. Futility, exasperation, blow-ups, tantrums, and tears often ensue. Things
are said, impulsive decisions are made, we may later regret. You should never
let it get that far. When symptoms of a pending meltdown appear, do what the electric
companies do during periods of high demand. Go into brownout mode. Take your intensity
level down a notch or two. Realize you're just one person, there are limits to
what you can do, and it's just not possible to be everywhere and solve every problem.
Your best will have to suffice. This acceptance will not only be a tremendous
relief, it will allow you to carry on without overloading your circuits and shutting
down altogether. Brownout or blow-up? Why make yourself crazy? Make StressHoliday.com your home page and be greeted each weekday morning with a new stress-reducing strategy! Based
on G. Gaynor McTigue's acclaimed book Why Make Yourself Crazy? featured
in major publications and on talk shows across America.
Previous Stress Tip Readily give out and receive hugs. Studies have shown that hugs can reduce stress and tension appreciably. Obviously, some of us aren't overt huggers and may shy away from such a suggestion. (And granted, it may be more stressful to hug someone you dislike.) But if you can get past the initial awkwardness, you'll find a good deal of relief in the occasional squeeze. Your spouse, children, parents, and other loved ones are all good sources of hugs. Even a quick embrace between friends as part of a greeting eases tension. The best thing is, two people can benefit from one hug! That's a pretty efficient way to reduce stress. So hug early, and hug often. Why make yourself crazy?
