Today's
Stress Tip..by
G. Gaynor McTigue..MON.8/01/05 Don't always expect government to cure your ills. If
you're depending on government to right every wrong that befalls you, you're in
for some frustrating times ahead. Because we pay so much in taxes, we expect to
get top-notch services in return. And as you're well aware, that's not always
the case. (In some quarters, rarely the case.) Government was never meant to replace
self-reliance and personal responsibility anyway. The services it performs best
are those aimed at the collective good rather than individual need. When you have
a problem, you have every right to call on your local representative or the appropriate
agency to help solve it. But don't be surprised if it's met with red tape, lack
of interest, delays, and denials. So rather than grind your teeth down at night,
be prepared to deal with the issue in other ways. Why make yourself crazy? Based
on G. Gaynor McTigue's acclaimed book Why Make Yourself Crazy? featured
in major publications and on talk shows across America.
Previous Stress Tip Become a fan. Root for something. Or someone. A sports team, a star athlete, a celebrity idol. A person facing a daunting challenge. Or someone trying to accomplish a feat that's never been done. Maybe even (dare I say?) a politician. Whatever, whomever -- whether local, national or international -- being a fan is known to reduce stress. Yes, it's true. In spite of the fact you'll pull your hair out over bonehead plays, lackluster performance and heartbreaking defeats. Or perhaps because of it. Screaming at the TV or stomping your feet in the grandstand is certainly a way to release tension. So pick out your heroes and throw your support behind them. Follow their progress. Attend their performances. Deck yourself out in their gear. And see what mitigating effect it has on your stress. Why make yourself crazy?
