Get into shape.
Lack of time is no
excuse for not exercising. In fact, being in shape will improve your physical
and mental capacity to such an extent, you'll probably gain time.
And enjoy life more. A regular fitness routine, combined with good eating
habits, will keep you leaner, healthier, more energetic. You owe that
to yourself. And your family. Being in poor physical condition only adds
to your stress and the sense of futility that you'll never catch up. Climb
out of that swamp. Get fit. Feel good. Why make yourself crazy?
Don't lose sleep
over losing sleep.
You're lying in bed
and can't sleep. So you become upset that you're squandering prime slumber
time. Which causes you to lose even more sleep. Which upsets you even
more. Before you know it, it's dawn and you're beside yourself. If this
happens frequently, professional help may be required. But if it's only
an occasional problem caused by current stressful circumstances, assure
yourself of this. While you may not be asleep, you're at least resting
your body and mind in a quiet, dark, peaceful environment. You're not
working, you're not burning energy, you're not up and about. Resources
are being replenished. Use this knowledge to relax and comfort yourself.
Take your mind off present concerns. More than likely you'll eventually
drift off into sleep. And even if it's only for a little while, view it
as needed rest gained. Why make yourself crazy?
Eat a healthy breakfast.
Loading up on caffeine
and sugar (coffee and donuts) is like burning poor quality fuel: you have
to keep pumping more in or you'll fizzle out altogether. And leave yourself
jittery, tense and irritable. Skipping breakfast is even worse. Why start
your day at a distinct disadvantage? Eat a solid breakfast. For example,
a high-protein cereal (like old-fashioned oatmeal), fresh fruit and skim
milk. It'll dish out a steady flow of energy for hours. Forget the sticky
buns. Start the day at peak performance by putting some quality fuel in
your tank. Why make yourself crazy?

Stress isn't something
you get rid of once and for all. The outside pressures are always there,
the tendencies to lapse back into stressful habits will continue to dog
you. Just because you have a stress-free day today doesn't mean you'll
have one tomorrow. That's why it's important to frequently review these
daily strategies, remind yourself to implement them, and reinforce your
resolve. To become physically fit, you don't just exercise for a few days
then stop. You have to keep at it and make it a part of your life. It's
the same with stress. Try to make these adjustments and attitude changes
a permanent part of your behavior. If you do, you'll become impervious
to pressure situations and all but eliminate the stress in your life.
