Financial
Stress Tips...by
G. Gaynor McTigueDon't live and die with the financial markets. If you've invested
long-termand have no intention of cashing in soonignore the day-to-day
fluctuations of the market. They'll have little bearing on the final tally, but
will exact a costly toll in dashed hopes or inflated expectations every time the
market dives or soars. Don't become a tickertape junkie. Forget about your investments,
like gold socked away in a vault. Why make yourself crazy? Don't equate saving with buying things on sale. Real
saving takes sacrifice. Doing without. And putting money away. But we've been
deceived, or are deceiving ourselves, into thinking we're saving money by spending
it. That's why everything is almost always on sale. (Which makes you suspect it's
overpriced to begin with.) So when they tell you to act now or lose out on big
savings, don't buy it. Wait until you really need the item. Chances are you'll
find it on sale anyway. Why keep chasing after so-called "savings" that
just put you further into debt? Why make yourself crazy? Don't pay for everything twice. Once with your money, and again with your resentment. Getting angry every time you reach for your wallet is high blood pressure hell. Things cost. And invariably they cost more than we expect them to. Still more every time prices go upand you can bet they will. It's a fact of life you have to accept. Letting it eat away at you only does unnecessary harm. Replace those ill feelings with positive ones. Like what you're getting, not what you're spending. And if you really don't think it's worth the tab, shop around for a better deal. Or do without. Why make yourself crazy? Don't feel guilty when you can't always give. You're
besieged with requests to give money. To charities, schools, churches, community
groups, political organizations, fundraising events... You're solicited by mail,
email, telephone, fax, ads, neighbors, coworkers, strangers. Each may be a worthy
cause in itself, but collectively the relentless demands can drive you nuts...if
not into debt. Sure, you should give. As generously as yours means allow. But
give selectively to those causes you feel most passionate about. And the ones
you can't afford, don't let yourself, or anyone else, make you feel guilty about.
You can't be responsible for all the ills of the world. You do what you can. So
never fret over keeping those free return-address stickers or greeting cards,
even if you didn't give. Why make yourself crazy?
